About This Course

Learning Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh is an integral part of Muslim conduct. As Muslims, we have to abide by certain rules to guide the Ummah towards the straight path, in accordance with the Qur’an and Sunnah. The set of unchangeable rules is known as Shari’a (Islamic law), whereas Fiqh is the term for Islamic jurisprudence. It is a process by means of which jurists derive sets of guidelines, rules and regulations based on the Shari’ah. Generally, we have the  four schools in Fiqh, namely Syafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi and Hanbali. All Muslims with cultural diversities and customs from all over the world follow different schools of Fiqh.

Participants will be equipped with an understanding of the underlying subtleties within the four schools in Fiqh and will experience first-hand how the various texts work including the matn, sharh and hashiya. They will become familiar with the chains of transmission, major works written and timelines of scholars and will be equipped with the theory of legal maxims and higher objectives of the sharī'a (Maqasid). Participants will also be equipped with understanding of why there are differences of opinion within the four schools in Fiqh and learn how to appreciate these variances.

In this course, Shaykh Allie Khalfe will explain key concepts and terminology in Fiqh and Usul al-fiqh based primarily on the Shafi’i School and the classic Poem or Matn of Qadi Abu Shuja’.
